A digital survey and environmental monitoring system required secure mounting to the front of a train so that environmental and asset data could be captured across the network. The mounting solution needed to safely support the device and battery while remaining compliant with rail structural standards, maintaining safe manual-handling characteristics and ensuring that driver sightlines were unaffected.

The support structure was designed in accordance with the structural loading requirements defined in BS EN 12663-1 for equipment attached to rail vehicle bodies. A rigid connection strategy was adopted to ensure that operational loads were effectively reacted into the vehicle headstock without modification to the existing structure wherever possible.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was carried out on the combined mounting structure and sensing system to assess stresses and deformation under the prescribed loading conditions. Results were reviewed against appropriate failure criteria and safety margins to confirm that the system retained acceptable structural performance in both normal and exceptional cases.

Alongside the technical validation work, operational acceptance was supported through direct engagement with driver representatives to demonstrate that the installation did not compromise visibility or safety.

The outcome was a structurally compliant, standards-based mounting solution that provided sufficient load-carrying capacity, minimal impact on the existing vehicle structure and full operational acceptance. The project demonstrates the value of disciplined, standards-led mechanical engineering in enabling the safe deployment of new technology within the rail environment.
